Boa matéria do Ars Technica explicando o que é metadata e porque file name extensions não são uma boa idéia

the ultimate file system will solve the problem.
You'll always have to exchange files with other
systems.
The minimal common denominator is the file
data, the data fork, anything else can be lost
when transfering to another system.
So the best way to go is to store the most
essential information on a header in the file.
And this should be done by the application
and not the file system.
For exemple the first few bytes of a word
document should have
"com.microsoft.word.98". A jpeg "org.jpeg.
IS10918-1". Or another standard that should
be adopetd by the application developer.
And in the future,2-4 years, it becomes a
standard and every filesystem can start using
it.
