October 1853, on a hilltop in Lynn, Massachusetts, a group assembled to create the New Messiah. They had not come to pray or to praise God: they were actually going to build Him out of metal and wood under the supervision of spirits. When the body was complete, they believed it would be infused with life to revolutionise the world and raise mankind to an exalted level of spiritual development.

The Global Consciousness Project (GCP) is an international collaboration of scientists, artists, and business people. It was created in 1998 by a group of researchers working in the boundary areas of physics and psychology, and has grown to include some 75 individuals around the world. Our purpose is to gather evidence and study indications of the subtle reach of human consciousness in the physical world on a global scale. We maintain a network of special instruments designed to produce random data that apparently are affected by human consciousness under special conditions. The hypothesis of the GCP is that the continuous streams of data from these instruments will show anomalous deviations associated with "Global Events". We predict an effect when there is a large-scale coherence and resonance of feeling generated by deep reactions to major news events.

Rarely does philosophy produce empirical predictions. The Doomsday argument is an important exception. From seemingly trivial premises it seeks to show that the risk that humankind will go extinct soon has been systematically underestimated. Nearly everybody's first reaction is that there must be something wrong with such an argument. Yet despite being subjected to intense scrutiny by a growing number of philosophers, no simple flaw in the argument has been identified.
